Moving with the Wind
The golden sand stretched on for miles, a light breeze caused the top level of grains to glide across the surface. The peaceful sand began to arouse as the wind touched his face and began to speak.
“I have heard your desires, everything has its own Personal Legend. But people can’t turn themselves into the wind. We are two very different things.” said the wind. The boy whose name was Santiago stood standing in the middle of desert, engulfed in its power believed differently. Well he had to, his life depended on it.
“Teach me to be the wind for a few moments”, said the boy. The wind was intrigued by the boy's proposal however despite being able to create deserts, sink ship, cause entire forest to fall and blow through cities it had found its limit. The wind could not help Santiago.
The wind then commenced to blow harder to make the sands rise higher as the boy rejected his answer. It then mentioned that heaven may have the answer.
The sand blew with all of its strength, a sandstorm so strong that it blotted out the sun. The others could no longer see anything and some too feared for their lives. Santiago was now with the sun.
Throughout their conversation the wind blew with greater power to protect the boy. Liking what it heard, the wind screamed and the forces became stronger. Tents and animals blew away and the men clutched each other in hopes of not flying away.
Santiago prayed, it was prayer he had never said before. In the silence, he found that the wind, and sun too were trying to understand the world and that they also didn’t know why they had been created.
He reached into the Soul of the World and saw that it was a piece of the Soul of God. The Soul of God was was his own soul. Santiago came to the realization that he too could perform miracles.
For generations after that day was remembered, it was the day that the wind had blew as it had never blown before. The Arabs recounted that day as the one where a boy turned himself into the wind.

The Desert Sand
One of the most storied and unforgiving lands in the world, the Sahara -- the Arabic word for "desert" -- evokes a poignant sense of time and nature's power, of antiquity and legend, of wonder and mystery. 3.6 million square miles of dry, and hot sand cover the one of harshest deserts in the world. Ergs, which are large areas of shifting sand dunes, with some of some of them reaching 590 feet (180 meters). Along with rocky hamada, a type of desert landscape that has very little sand and is made up of primarily barren, hard, rocky plateaus cover this great desert. Minimal to no rain/water or vegetation with a few exceptions from the Nile valley, a couple oases and the northern highlands make sustaining life harder than normal. Hurricane level winds make this terrain a difficult place to travel. Rodents, snakes and scorpions thrive in this desert environment. Among the 40-plus species of rodents in the Sahara is the jerboa, related to the mouse, rat and squirrel. However, animals are not the only species to call this great blanket of sand their home. That's right, humans. There are two main tribes known to the Sahara desert and their names are Tuareg tribe and Bedouin tribe. The Tuareg tribe are said to be tall, fair skinned and Berber-speaking nomadic people. The word Tuareg comes from an Arabic word meaning "the God-forsaken people" but they refer to themselves as Imouhar -- "the free men." The Bedouin tribe men call themselves people of the tent. These people are Arabs that are not known to be very high on the social Hierarchy as their jobs are mainly camel raisers, drivers and nomads. This tribes are masters of the land. The desert nomads know their way between wells and oases but even the most experienced desert wayfarer is aware that when they are low on water that a simple wrong-turn could be a death-sentence. The lands are home to little life and much death but through the guidance of the lands people can survive. Much like the ever changing winds, this climate can work with you or against. The winds can be a guide or the blowing air can be detrimental. Trust the process and believe. The journey through this vast golden land may not proceed the way one believed but like the weather the storm is important part and the slight breeze is just a reward. Personal Legends Discovering and acting on a personal legend, is believed to be the most difficult task the human mind and soul can pursue. It takes someone out of the ordinary to be able to overcome the hurdles that appear when seeking a personal legend. A personal legend is one’s destiny in life. One must identify their purpose in life, and then pursue that. However not everyone has the motivation and mental wisdom to achieve this goal. In order to achieve one’s personal legend, one must be open to the omens in their life guiding them towards their personal goals and dreams. To accomplish one’s personal legend, one must have an open mind. A close-minded person will never be able to discover their personal legend, let alone pursue it. One must be open minded to their purpose in life, and not be stubborn when discovering it. It is very important to be in touch with oneself and the people around them in order to achieve the personal legend that they are chasing. Many people never achieve their personal legend because, they always say that they will get to it later. They become content in the place that they are currently in during their life and never go on to discover they think that they truly desired all along. The crystal merchant is a prime example of this. He had a dream for his entire life, his own personal legend. However he believed that his life was always in a good spot. Between his crystal shop and more factors he never felt like he should leave. He let contentment in life keep him from living his own dream, and even though he was happy with his life, something will be missing. Santiago is the complete opposite. He was raised to be a priest but he followed his heart and gave up the studies and became a lower member of society so he could travel the lands. His life a Shepherd was very good and he enjoyed it very much but when a dream kept recurring, he gave up that life to follow his personal legend. His journey was nothing short of difficult. His journey also took way longer than one would expect. However, though all of the road bumps Santiago kept following his legend, and those road bumps are what made his achieving his legend all so sweeter. The Englishman that Santiago encounters is in pursuit of the language of the universe. The Englishman constantly studies, and he practically lives behind books, trying to soak in knowledge, and discover this universal language that he seeks. Like Santiago, the Englishman decides to pack up, and join the caravan in order to seek his personal legend and follow his dreams. He believes in omens and signs, but lacks the faith to ever truly discover his personal legend. The Alchemist’s personal legend is extremely unique compared to everyone else’s. The Alchemist’s sole purpose in life was to help others discover their own personal legend. While the Alchemist travels, he finds people that need a nudge towards their personal legend, and it is his job to give that nudge. The Alchemist directs and guides others towards following their dreams, rather than focusing on himself. His pursuit of happiness, is helping others pursue theirs. Listen to whispering winds as the push a tiny spec of sand across the great desert. As the winds starts to yell the sand comes to life. It is telling us something. |
